Four generations on the same black soil

Our fields sit just outside Sumerpur in Hamirpur district, on the deep black cotton soil that Bundelkhand is known for. Til goes in after the rains; moong follows in the kharif rotation. It is dry-land farming — no borewell luxury, no forcing the crop. What the soil and the monsoon allow is what we pack.

For decades our harvest left in anonymous sacks through the mandi, and we never knew where our best lots ended up. Sumerpur Farm started so that a family in Pune or Bengaluru could open a pack and know exactly which field and which harvest it came from.
